FAQ
How is testing handled for children with limited English proficiency?

No Child Left Behind requires that all children be assessed. In order to show adequate yearly progress, schools must test at least 95 percent of the various subgroups of children, including students with limited English proficiency. States must provide reasonable accommodations for students with limited English proficiency. Accommodations may include native-language versions of the assessment; however, in the area of reading and language arts, students who have been in U.S. schools for three consecutive years will be assessed in English.

What can I do as a parent to help my child have a successful year?

Please take the time to check and review your child's homework and check for understanding. Stay in contact with the teacher when you have a question or concerns. Help your child study by asking questions. With both positive reinforcement and praise your child will have a great and successful year.

Do you have any advice on raising children bilingually?

  • Be consistent in your use of the two languages. It is best that you always speak your native language with your child.
  • It is important that your child make friends with English native-speakers in your community.
  • Make your home a language-rich environment with plenty of English books, computer games, and videos. Good children's television is an excellent way for them to develop their understanding of English.
  • Your can post labels on objects around the house identifying them with their name, e.g. refrigerator, door, etc. If you just give your child the impression that learning English is the most natural thing in the world, he or she will be fine!
  • Feeling comfortable and welcomed in a new school environment is a necessary condition for making progress in language and cognitivity.
  • Finally, I would do everything to ensure that your child’s English does not replace his or her first language; they should not feel that their first language is in any way inferior to English. In addition, the best way for this to happen is for your child to continue to talk and read in their first language.
